IPTG is an analog of galactose which is not cleaved by E.coli β-galactosidase. Inducer of the lac operon. β-Galactosidase-positive colonies can be detected by X-Gal (5-Bromo-4-chloroindol-3-yl-β-D-galactoside), M-1190.
