S-Phenylcysteine in blood proteins is a biological marker for the exposure to benzene. Kang-Sickel et al. studied the formation of S-arylcysteine in keratin occuring during dermal exposition to aromatic hydrocarbons and synthesized Cys(phenyl) and Cys(naphthyl)-containing segments of the keratin proteins K1 and K10.
